INVITATION FOR PARTICIPATION IN 'THE KICK' EXHIBITION PROJECT

We hereby invite you to take part in THE KICK Multimedia Project organized by the PlayDrama Theatre and Most Association, taking place from 17th to 25th September 2009 in Split, Croatia, and featuring different artistic and dialogue forms (theatre performance, exhibition, music video, lectures and discussions).

The aim of the project is a critical reaction to an ever growing phenomenon of juvenile violence in Croatia and beyond. Namely, in the last two years, violent juvenile crime rate has increased by no less than 20%. According to the records, one out of four children has experienced some form of violence and almost a thousand denunciations of children's rights abuse have been filed. Another area of concern is the influence of the mass media on the rise in violence, especially new forms of violence which are spread by means of the internet software technologies and via mobile telecommunications such as chat, sms, Facebook and the like. It might be interesting to note that in 2008, 400 pupils participated in some form of violence in Split.

There is no systematic detection of children's and minors' risky behaviour in the Republic of Croatia, although the fourth grade of primary school should already be high time to start prevention actions. If we consider that one of the violence forms called 'structural violence' is defined as an inappropriate or missing action by the society (state), the previously mentioned fact becomes even more disturbing. This is the reason why we are making this plea to a wider community in an attempt to encourage discussion as well as an active analysis of possible solutions, away from media spectacularism as the only reaction. The truth is, the most effective measures against violence fall in the domain of adequate preventive actions which undeniably include creative energy directed towards dialogue and tolerance propagation.

Believing in symbolic force and potentials of visual communications, we invite all artists and designers to use their visual tools to make a comment or criticism on violence, be it a cause or a consequence, a private or a social testimony, a global or a local issue, prominent or suppressed in society. Wider contextualization and solution ideas are particularly welcome!

We have planned two possible forms of reaction. Since a street POSTER is the most explicit and democratic of all means of public communication, it was chosen as the bearer of the visual part of the programme, its dimensions measuring 100x70 cm. Led by the idea of an engaging poster and an open democratic wall ('dazibao'), the received posters will be pasted on a construction made exclusively for that purpose and placed in the central pedestrian zone of the city of Split, on the premiere night of 'The Kick' performed by the new PlayDrama Theatre.

Despite the flare-up of media and a wide variety of visual communication forms surrounding us, the STREET has remained the most convincing communication channel where an individual exchanges coincidences and purposefulness of his or her presence with other individuals and community as a whole. As a place both private and public, general and individual, it is relevant to every citizen and accidental passerby, and the same applies to the encounters with posters and their messages.

You are also free to send your message in the form of an old or recent VIDEO, critically addressing both the violence in general and the specific qualities of adolescent formative and transitive age. The video programme will be presented in the Art-Conservation Department Gallery in the centre of Split, simultaneously with the theatrical performance of 'The Kick' and the Street Poster Installation.

We kindly ask authors to respond to this action and to send their posters in TIFF format, 300 dpi precision, on a CD, if possible together with its print in size 100x70, as well as their videos on a DVD, no later than 20th of August 2009 to the Association's address. It's worth mentioning that by sending in the ready-made printed posters you become the exhibition donor.

We thank you in advance for your support in hope for a big and loud response!
